Basketball Game Vocabulary Words
Assist: When a player makes a pass that leads to a basket made by a teammate, it is called an assist.
Dribble: When the player taps the ball with his hand so that it bounces one or more times on the floor.
Dunk: A dunk occurs when a player scores by throwing the ball through the rim with force. The dunk is one of the most exciting plays in basketball.
Foul: When a player holds, pushes, or charges into an opponent, they are called for a foul.
Hang Time: The amount of time a player can stay in the air while attempting a shot.
Jump Shot:When a player jumps in the air and shoots from the outside.
Pass: To throw a ball from one person to another, as in a game of catch.
Rebound: When a player grabs the ball out of the air after a missed shot, he is credited with a rebound.
Score: The record of points made by the players in the game.
Shoot: To throw a ball at the basket or teammate.
Time-out: When a team wants to discuss strategy with its coach, it will stop the game by asking the referee for a time-out Triple Threat: The name for the "triple threat" position derives from the fact that the offensive player with the basketball has three choices regarding what to do with the ball. He or she can either dribble, pass, or shoot the ball. Because of this variety of choices defenders must give the offensive player in the triple threat position a wide berth.
